Adolescents’ attitudes, habits, identity and social support in relation to physical activity after the COVID-19 pandemic

This study focuses on adolescents’ cognitive processes, behaviors and social support (SS) as they relate to physical activity (PA) before and after the pandemic. The aims of the study were: (1) to investigate the changes in adolescents’ engagement in moderate and vigorous physical activity (MVPA), and examine the changes in PA-related attitudes and behaviors before and after the COVID-19 pandemic; (2) to analyze the correlations between the significant changes that were found, PA engagement, and SS. The survey targeted third-year middle school students of Italian nationality, attending male and female mixed classes, residents in urban, periphery and sub-urban areas, living in families with different incomes, and different habits of engaging in PA. A longitudinal study was developed using a standardized questionnaire. The questionnaire was administered in April–May 2023 to a sample of 952 students aged 11/14 residing in the Marche region in Central Italy. Increasing values were found in the post-COVID-19 phase for all the cognitive processes and attitudes, in particular, those regarding habits (0.66 vs 0.50, + 32%) and identity (0.70 vs 0.55, + 27%) related to PA. Significant correlations were found between these values and VPA engagement and between the values of the same indicators and SS (p < 0.01). The strongest relationship was found with the dimension of identity (r = 0.51; r = 054).

The mediating effects of hope on the relationships of social support and self-esteem with psychological resilience in patients with stroke

PurposeTo explore the mediating effect of hope in the relationships between social support and self-esteem with psychological resilience among patients with stroke survivors in early rehabilitation.MethodsA cross-sectional study design was adopted. Data from a cross-sectional survey of 210 patients undergoing early stroke rehabilitation were analyzed using structural equation modeling. The variables of interest were measured using the Connor Davidson Resilience Scale, the Social Support Rating Scale, the Herth Hope Index, and the Self-Esteem Scale. This article reports according to the STROBE checklist.ResultsA positive relationship was found between social support and psychological resilience (β1 = 0.548), which was mediated by hope (β2 = 0.114), and social support had significant direct effect on resilience (β3 = 0.434). A positive relationship was also found between self-esteem and psychological resilience (β4 = 0.380), which was mediated by hope (β5 = 0.200), and self-esteem had significant direct effect on resilience (β6 = 0.179).ConclusionAccording to the results of this study, some strategies can be incorporated into the rehabilitation process to enhance psychological resilience, such as cultivating individual personality characteristics and improving patients’ social relationships. In the future, we need to explore methods for improving psychological resilience among patients with stroke in combination with their risk factors to improve their quality of life and reduce the incidence of post-stroke depression.

Hubungan Dukungan Sosial Terhadap Quality of Life Pada ODHA (Orang dengan HIV/AIDS)

Background: HIV or Human Immunedeficiency Virus is a disease that attacks the human immune system so that this disease causes a weakening of the immune system to fight a disease. While AIDS or Acquired Immunne Deficiency Syndrome is a collection of diseases caused by a decrease in the human immune system caused by HIV infection. A person infected with HIV / AIDS will feel depressed, unable to accept the situation, feel helpless and experience fear for the future. This is because in Asia the negative stigma of HIV/AIDS is still very high. Thus, it is very necessary to know the relationship of social support to the quaity of life for PLHIV at Bangli General Hospital. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship of social support to the quaity of life in PLHIV. Methods: The research method used quantitative analytics with a cross sectional approach using primary data with data collection instruments in the form of questionnaires distributed to 60 respondents where the sampling technique used was the Non Probability Sampling technique with a saturated sampling method carried out in November-January 2024 at Bangli General Hospital. Data were analyzed univariately and bivariately chi square. Results: The results showed that there was a significant relationship between social support for quality of life in PLHIV with a p value of &lt; 0.05 which means ha was accepted and h0 was rejected. Conclusion: Social support is very influential on the quality of life in PLHIV. The better the support provided, the higher the quality of life that will be owned by PLHIV.

Flourishing in Education: Psychometric Properties of the Flourishing Scale in a Sample of Romanian Teachers

The Flourishing Scale (FS) is one of the most well-known tools for assessing psychological flourishing. However, its psychometric properties have been little analyzed in the case of teachers. This study aimed to examine the validity of the scale in the case of a sample of Romanian teachers and to analyze the latter’s level of flourishing. In this regard, 323 Romanian teachers from the pre-university education system were recruited. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was used to assess the construct validity of the scale, and Cronbach’s α and McDonald’s ω indices were used to assess internal consistency. The convergent validity was assessed by associating the FS with other instruments related to well-being: the Mental Health Continuum-Short Form and the Scale of Positive and Negative Experience. Network analysis was performed to examine the items that are particularly influential in the scale. As a result of the CFA, the one-factor structure of the scale was certified (χ2/df = 1.39; CFI = 0.99; RMSEA = 0.035). The internal consistency is excellent (both α and ω = 0.89). The FS correlates with both of the scales which operationalize components of well-being. The teachers’ flourishing level is above average. The network approach showed that the items related to self-acceptance, optimism, and respect had the highest indicators of centrality, and the item related to supportive social relationships was the least informative in the network. For the male subsample, flourishing means optimism about the future and respect for others, and for the female respondents, it is related to self-acceptance and respect. The results provide support for using the scale in assessing flourishing among teachers.

The Loud Silent Side of Single Parenthood in Europe: Health and Socio-Economic Circumstances from a Gender Perspective

AbstractLone parenthood is one of the multiple accepted family types that make up today’s societies. In Europe, 3.2% of total households were single adults with children in 2019. Understanding the socioeconomic and demographic transformations that have led to the relatively high rates of single-parent families have attracted the attention and concern of researchers and policy makers. This study contributes to the literature by exploring trends in and predictors of health outcomes, lifestyle factors (obesity, smoking and alcohol) and social support among single-parent families and cohabiting couples in 20 European countries. To do so, microdata from the European Health Interview Survey-EHIS (2013–2015 and 2018–2020) is used. Running multivariate logistic regressions, we estimate the impact of individual factors associated with single parents’ health status, lifestyle factors and social support, adjusting by demographic characteristics and stressors. Our analysis suggests that both single mothers and fathers are left behind in several respects compared to their couple counterparts: lower education levels, lower income and worse economic conditions, worse physical health, and poorer social support relationships. Differences in health status, lifestyle factors and social support between single and couple parents, both mothers and fathers could be associated with the unequal distribution of demographic and stress factors found in this article. Understanding these characteristics of single-parent families could enable the establishment of community-level interventions to mitigate the adverse effects of lone parenthood and their children.

Social Support and Spousal Relationship Quality Improves Responsiveness among Anxious Mothers.

Maternal responsiveness, a mother's ability to consistently identify infant cues and then act on them, is critical for healthy child development. A woman's social support and spousal relationship may affect responsiveness to an infant, especially among mothers with anxiety. We assessed how social support and spousal relationship quality is associated with responsiveness among anxious mothers, and if postpartum depression (PPD) moderated these associations. Cross-sectional data were collected from 2019 to 2022 in a public hospital in Pakistan from 701 women at six-weeks postpartum. Eligible women had at least mild anxiety in early- to mid- pregnancy. Linear regression analyses assessed if spousal relationship quality and social support from family and friends were associated with maternal responsiveness, measured using the Maternal Infant Responsiveness Instrument. Interaction terms were used to examine if PPD moderated these associations. Spousal relationship quality (B = 2.49, 95% CI: 1.48, 3.50) and social support (B = 1.07, 95% CI: 0.31, 1.83) were positively related to maternal responsiveness to the infant. Emotional support from a spouse was positively associated with responsiveness (B = 1.08, 95% CI: 0.12, 2.03 depressed; B = 2.96, 95% CI: 1.34, 4.58 non-depressed), and conflict with the spouse was negatively associated with responsiveness (B=-1.02, 95% CI: -1.94, -0.09 depressed; B=-2.87, 95% CI: -4.36, -1.37 non-depressed). However, social support was related to responsiveness only in non-depressed women (B = 2.61, 95% CI: 1.14, 4.07). While spousal relationships and social support enhance maternal responsiveness, for depressed women, spousal relationships were particularly critical. In considering maternal-infant interventions to improve child development outcomes, our study indicates the importance of supportive relationships that foster effective responsiveness.

Loneliness, social support, and social networks: urban–rural variation and links to wellbeing in Scotland

Abstract Aim Social relationships are key public health priorities, with their relevance to wellbeing amplified in recent years. Relationships are embedded within the wider environment in which they occur; however, we lack understanding of whether, and how, places may affect social relationships. This study utilises an urban vs rural framework to examine variation in three specific aspects of relationships (loneliness, social support, and social networks), and their links to wellbeing. Subjects and method Cross-sectional social network data, collected in Scotland in 2021 (N = 191), was used. Bivariate comparisons tested for differences in loneliness, social support, and social networks between urban and rural participants. Multivariable regression tested for associations between each construct and wellbeing, and interaction effects assessed differences in associations between the urban and rural locations. Results Urban participants had higher levels of loneliness and poorer wellbeing, even though reported levels of social support didn’t differ. After adjusting for sociodemographic characteristics, loneliness, social support, and perceived emotional closeness of social networks were all associated with levels of wellbeing. There was no evidence that these associations differed between participants in urban and rural areas. Conclusion Overall, findings highlight key place-based differences that inform the design of efforts to promote social connectivity and enhance wellbeing. Given that urban residents had lower wellbeing and higher levels of loneliness, coupled with evidence demonstrating the importance of close, supportive social relationships, intervention efforts that promote social connectivity in urban environments are particularly needed.

Mediating role of social support in dysphoria, despondency, and quality of life in patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis.

Dysphoria and despondency are prevalent psychological issues in patients undergoing Maintenance Hemodialysis (MHD) that significantly affect their quality of life (QOL). High levels of social support can significantly improve the physical and mental well-being of patients undergoing MHD. Currently, there is limited research on how social support mediates the relationship between dysphoria, despondency, and overall QOL in patients undergoing MHD. It is imperative to investigate this mediating effect to mitigate dysphoria and despondency in patients undergoing MHD, ultimately enhancing their overall QOL. To investigate the mediating role of social support in relationships between dysphoria, despondency, and QOL among patients undergoing MHD. Participants comprised 289 patients undergoing MHD, who were selected using a random sampling approach. The Social Support Rating Scale, Self-Rating Anxiety Scale, Self-Rating Depression Scale, and QOL Scale were administered. Correlation analysis was performed to examine the associations between social support, dysphoria, despondency, and QOL in patients undergoing MHD. To assess the mediating impact of social support on dysphoria, despondency, and QOL in patients undergoing MHD, a bootstrap method was applied. Significant correlations among social support, dysphoria, despondency, and quality in patients undergoing MHD were observed (all P < 0.01). Dysphoria and despondency negatively correlated with social support and QOL (P < 0.01). Dysphoria and despondency had negative predictive impacts on the QOL of patients undergoing MHD (P < 0.05). The direct effect of dysphoria on QOL was statistically significant (P < 0.05). Social support mediated the relationship between dysphoria and QOL, and this mediating effect was significant (P < 0.05). Similarly, the direct effect of despondency on QOL was significant (P < 0.05). Moreover, social support played a mediating role between despondency and QOL, with a significant mediating effect (P < 0.05). These findings suggest that social support plays a significant mediating role in the relationship between dysphoria, despondency, and QOL in patients undergoing MHD.

Relationship of parental social support with adolescent career planning

Adolescent career planning should ideally be given social support from parents, this support will help teenagers understand their talents and abilities, help teenagers obtain information about the career fields they are interested in, help teenagers to adapt the career fields they will plan to the teenagers' abilities and interests, so that it will make it easier for teenagers to determine career planning. In reality, there are still many teenagers who lack parental social support in their career planning efforts. The aim of this research is to describe the relationship between social support and adolescent career planning. This type of research is descriptive quantitative correlational. The research population was students in classes X and XI SMK Negeri 1 Padang registered in the 2022/2023 academic year with a total of 561 students and a sample of 237 students, taken using the stratified random sampling technique. Instrument used was a questionnaire prepared based on the Likert scale model. The research data were analyzed using percentage analysis and to test the research hypothesis the Pearson product moment correlation technique was used.  The research results show that there is a significant relationship between parental social support and teenagers' career planning with a correlation coefficient of 0.500 at a significance level of 0.00 and the direction of the relationship is positive. The implication of this research is the need for maximum parental social support for teenagers, because this will make teenagers more precise in making career decisions. Then guidance and counseling teachers must improve various types of services that can support the development of teenagers' career decisions at school.

The moderating role of perceived social support in relationship between workplace violence with post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms among nurses in Karbala

Introduction: The presence of violence in workplace is a threatening factor for nurses’ psychological health. Therefore, the present study was conducted with the aim of determining the moderating role of the perceived social support in relationship between workplace violence (physical, Verbal and sexual harassment) with Post Traumatic Stress Disorders symptoms) PTSD(  among nurses in Karbala city, Iraq.&#x0D; Materials and Methods: Research method was descriptive correlation that is used in hierarchical regression analysis. The statistical population of the research included all the hospital nurses of the city of Karbala in Iraq in summer 2023, which among them, 349 nurses were selected by convenience sampling method. The data were collected using the violence in workplace questionnaire, Post Traumatic Stress Disorders symptoms checklist and perceived social support questionnaire. To analyze data, Pearson's correlation coefficient and hierarchical regression analysis statistical tests were used by SPSS software, 26 version.&#x0D; Results: The results revealed that the perceived social support moderates the relationship between the violence in workplace (physical, verbal and sexual harassment) with post-traumatic stress symptoms (p&lt;0.01). This means that, when the perceived social support is low, the hostility at workplace (physical, verbal and sexual harassment) has a stronger relationship with post-traumatic stress symptoms (p&lt;0.01).&#x0D;  Conclusion: Based on the results of the present study, it can be concluded that the perceived social support in necessary variable to prevent the destructive effects of violence in nurses' work settings. Therefore, due to the role and importance of perception of social support among nurses, attention to this important finding should be taken into consideration by managers and policy makers of healthcare organizations.

Turning Lemons into Lemonade: Social Support as a Moderator of the Relationship Between Technostress and Quality of Life Among University Students.

The overuse of internet-based technologies as a means of coping with the stress they generate has resulted in an alarming level of addiction, adversely impacting the quality of life and overall health of younger individuals. This social detachment, in turn, contributes to both physical and mental health deterioration. The potential remedy for this predicament lies in the application of social support as an antidote to internet addiction. In this context, our present study employs the Stress-Strain-Outcome model to explore the indirect effects of internet addiction and the moderating role of social support in relation to the influence of technostress on the quality of life of adults. We adopted a time-lagged design to collect data from university graduates and evaluated our study hypotheses using Mplus. Our empirical findings highlight the significant influence of technostress on internet addiction, with the latter significantly mediating the relationship between technostress and quality of life. Furthermore, our results reveal that social support effectively moderates the indirect effects of technostress on quality of life through its impact on internet addiction. These findings can help researchers and educators better understand the underlying mechanisms between technostress and quality of life with social support as the silver lining. This form of social support holds the potential not only to alleviate internet addiction but also to positively enhance the quality of life and overall wellbeing of individuals facing these challenges. The implications of these findings and avenues for future research are also discussed.

Social support in relation to posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms among patients with violent versus nonviolent injury.

Violent injuries have become increasingly more common in the United States. Individuals experiencing violent injury are at increased risk for the development of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as compared to those experiencing nonviolent injury. Social support is touted as a protective factor against various psychiatric symptoms (i.e., PTSD), though little is known about the relation between PTSD symptoms and social support in traumatic injury populations. The aims of the present paper were twofold: (1) examine the prevalence of PTSD as a function of injury type (2) explore differences in levels of social support as a function of injury type and (3) explore the association between injury type and later PTSD symptoms as moderated by baseline social support. Participants were 553 adults from a level-one trauma center in the Southeast United States who experienced a violent injury or nonviolent injury and completed measures of social support at baseline as well as PTSD symptoms at the 30-day follow-up timepoint. The study utilized data from both the baseline timepoint (i.e., upon admission to the trauma surgery unit), as well as a 30-day follow-up timepoint. Results demonstrated that those endorsing nonviolent injury reported lower levels of social support and PTSD symptoms. Social support predicted later PTSD symptoms until injury type was included as a covariate in the model. Social support did not moderate the relationship between injury type and later PTSD symptoms. Findings highlight the interrelatedness of key risk variables (i.e., injury type) with protective factors in influencing the trajectory of psychopathology postinjury. Violence intervention and interruption programs may have the capacity to fill patient needs when social support networks are insufficient. The Relationship between Social Support and Academic Stress to the Onset of Suicidal Ideation in Adolescents

Introduction: Psychological changes like emotional disorders often occur in adolescents that can cause pressure and stress when they cannot cope well. One way to reduce the psychological pain is to self-harm to suicidal thoughts. This study aims to explore the relationship of social support and academic stress to the onset of suicidal ideation in adolescents.&#x0D; Method:  This research used a quantitative with cross-sectional design. The respondents were 219 high school teenagers aged more than or equal to 17 years who were selected using purposive sampling techniques. This research was conducted in a senior high school in Denpasar Bali from January to May 2023. Data collection used the MSPSS questionnaire to measure social support, the ESSA questionnaire to measure academic stress, and the SIS questionnaire to measure suicidal ideation. Data were analyzed using the Spearman's rank test because the data was not normally distributed (α≤0.05).&#x0D; Result: The results of this study indicate that there was a significant relationship between social support (family, friends, and special people) and suicidal ideation (p=0.002; p=0.000; p=0.000); however, in the academic stress variable, it was found that there was no significant relationship with suicidal ideation in adolescents (p=0.085).&#x0D; Conclusion: These findings emphasize the importance of social support as a protective factor in adolescents in reducing suicidal ideation. Nursing education can be provided to teachers and students in an effort to prevent early mental health problems.

The relationship of social support to posttraumatic growth in COVID-19 among college students after experiencing campus lockdown: the effects of belief in a just world and meaning in life

BackgroundCampus lockdown orders were issued for the purpose of preventing and controlling COVID-19, which resulted in psychological problems among college students. However, the experiences they have during the pandemic may also lead to positive personal changes, including posttraumatic growth (PTG). The current study examined the mediating role of belief in a just world and meaning in life in social support and PTG during the COVID-19 campus lockdown.MethodAn online survey was conducted on 1711 college students in Hebei Province, China. Based on the survey results, a structural equation model was established.ResultsSocial support positively predicted PTG. Furthermore, belief in a just world and meaning in life played a mediating role between social support and PTG respectively. Besides, social support could also predict PTG through the multiple serial mediating effect of belief in a just world and meaning in life.ConclusionThese results indicated mechanisms by which social support influenced PTG, and this provided insights into how to promote post-traumatic growth among university students in the post-pandemic period.

A Qualitative Study of the Social Relationship Experiences Across the Life Course Among Black/African American Women Aging With HIV in the South.

Black/African American women continue to be disproportionately affected by HIV, facing multiple intersecting challenges that influence how they age and effectively manage their health. Supportive social relationships have been shown to help mitigate challenges and improve health in women with HIV, but little is known about Black/African American women's perceptions of social relationships. Guided by Life Course Theory, in-depth life history interviews were conducted with 18 Black/African American women aged 50+ years. In older adulthood, most important relationships among Black/African American women were with their adult children and grandchildren, intimate partners, God, and friends from the community. Factors that influenced relationships over time included: (a) a desire to build a community; (b) a need to empower oneself and give back; (c) yearning to engage the younger generation; and (d) battling HIV stigma. Older Black/African American women with HIV played a critical role in the education of the younger generation.

Understanding the relationship of academic motivation and social support in graduate nursing education in Egypt.

Obtaining a postgraduate nursing education in Egypt requires substantial resources, including a robust academic drive and supportive relationships. These resources help students overcome challenges and navigate their educational journey. This study examines the relationship between academic motivation and social support among nursing graduate students. A cross-sectional survey was conducted at two nursing colleges in Egypt, involving 410 randomly selected graduate students. The Academic Motivation Scale-College Version (AMS-C 28) and the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) were used. Findings revealed a statistically significant positive relationship between academic motivation and perceived social support (r = 0.515, p < 0.001). Hierarchical regression analysis revealed that 12.9% (Adjusted R² = 0.129) of the variance in academic motivation could be explained by perceived social support and level of education. This study pinpointed intrinsic motivation as the primary impetus for graduate nursing students. Robust social support and active participation in social and recreational activities were also significant motivators. Nursing education programs can enhance intrinsic motivation by integrating authentic learning experiences, providing empowering mentorship, offering condensed doctoral programs, and ensuring substantial peer support. The exploration of the role of novelty in graduate nursing education, facilitated by innovative teaching methods such as collaborative virtual reality simulations, gamification, and team-based research projects, can be advantageous. Building robust social networks is vital for establishing a supportive and motivating learning environment for nursing graduates in Egypt.

Street Subculture: Children's Livelihood Strategies for Surviving on the Streets of Addis Ababa

Abstract: This study explored the livelihood strategies children employ to survive on the streets of Addis Ababa. Street life demands children actively form social relationships with the public and their peers. Street subculture includes aspects of children's creativity, organized to present their sufferings, elicit emotion from passersby, and sympathy from alms-givers. The street subculture also includes the entertainment strategies children use to secure their livelihood. The strong social bonds and supportive relationships that underlie the street subculture reflect children's solidarity. This study recommends that interventions aimed at improving the lives of street children should consider their needs, skills, and creativity.

Lived experience of nurses caring for critically ill patients sustained by healthcare technologies in Benin-City, Nigeria

BackgroundA critically ill patient is someone who has a chance of recovery, if properly managed, but is usually in a life-threatening condition, associated with a high mortality rate, with significant financial impact on households, and associated with the cost of medical care. PurposeTo explore the lived experiences of nurses caring for persons with critical illnesses sustained with healthcare technologies. Design and MethodsA hermeneutic phenomenological design was utilized. Data were collected through in-depth individual interviews with sample size of ten participants, observations, and field notes. Data were analyzed using Paul Ricoeur's Theory of Interpretation and Nvivo software for data management. ResultsThe results revealed that the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is a complex unit, and Nurses are occupied with fear and worries associated with having to operate various health gadgets. They also experienced challenges in how to balance their attention between technology-based care and seeing patients as human beings. ConclusionBased on the outcomes of this study, it was suggested that ICU nurses require continual retraining in operating various health technologies without fear or worry. They must also improve their ability to be inclusive in their profession; balancing their focus between technology-based care and handling patients as human beings. The implication of this on practice is that ICU is a difficult learning environment for new nurses because of the numerous skills that must be learned quickly. Developing supportive social relationships was crucial for new ICU nurses to learn and adjust to this challenging clinical environment.
